The pharmaceutical and personal care markets drive dynamic demand
The International Organization of Aluminum Aerosol Canister Manufacturers (AEROBAL) reported a 6.8 percent increase in global shipments by its member companies to about 6 billion cans in 2022.
The growth of the market is mainly due to higher than average demand for pharmaceuticals, hairspray, shaving foam and other personal care products, which increased 13 percent, 17 percent, 14 percent and 42 percent, respectively, from last year. Demand from the deodorant and perfume markets, which dominate sales, was also pleasing, rising just under 4 per cent. Overall, the personal-care market accounts for about 82% of shipments.
Across the world, demand in the 27 EU member states, including the UK, grew by about 10 per cent. Deliveries to South and North America, which accounted for about 71 per cent of total deliveries to AEROBAL’s member companies, also rose 6 per cent. Demand from Asia/Australia also rose 6.7 percent, while only deliveries to the Middle East fell nearly 4 percent.

Machine parts, technicians and skilled Labour are in short supply
The aluminum aerosol tank industry currently faces two major challenges. First, machinery and equipment failed to adapt to the ever-changing demand for the production of aerotanks. In addition, the supply of technicians and skilled Labour has become a key competitive factor for the industry “, said Mr Lian Yunzeng, chairman of AEROBAL.
In terms of sustainability, the draft regulation on packaging and packaging waste proposed by the European Commission will pose further challenges to manufacturers and importers in Europe. The most stringent requirements for packaging minimization, improved recycling designs, extensive documentation requirements and compliance declarations will have a significant impact across the value chain. “The widely recognized innovative strength of the canning industry, the outstanding material properties and excellent recyclability of aluminum contribute to the realization of resource efficient packaging solutions that convincingly meet the new legal requirements,” added Chairman Lian Yunzeng.

The packaging market is resilient even in times of crisis
Existing orders in the industry indicate satisfactory market development in the first quarter of 2023. However, the situation in the energy market has eased, but the ongoing war in Ukraine, ongoing inflation and looming recession in many countries around the world are unnerving the sector. “It is true that in the past, even in times of crisis, the packaging market has been relatively resilient. However, the loss of consumer purchasing power could eventually have a negative impact on the FMCG market as well, hurting the personal care market
